Mastitis treatment
Physiotherapy Treatment for Mastitis and Blocked Ducts
Mastitis is a common, very painful condition that affects up to 1 in 5 lactating women.
Several factors can contribute to the development of mastitis, including sudden changes in feeding patterns, poor latch and nipple trauma, compression or trauma to the breasts from tight clothing, overly firm massage, or use of breast pumps. Previous episodes of mastitis also increase the risk of recurrence. If left untreated, mastitis can progress to more serious conditions such as infective mastitis or abscess formation. We prioritize all mastitis concerns as serious and urgent.
Typical symptoms of mastitis include:
- Tenderness
- Redness
- Heat
- Swelling
- Hardness or a firm lump
- Flu-like symptoms, including body aches and fever
- General feelings of unwellness
We can help treat and manage:
- Mastitis
- Blocked ducts
- White spots / milk blebs
Physiotherapy treatment can include:
- Therapeutic ultrasound – The use of sound waves and thermal energy reduces inflammation and pain while improving circulation and lymphatic drainage in the area. This treatment can be very effective at relieving symptoms. We usually recommend 3-4 ultrasound sessions to help resolve symptoms.
- Lymphatic drainage techniques – We teach self-management techniques to help reduce swelling and pain
- Preventative education – Self-management techniques and preventive strategies based on your story and history
- Postural advice – Guidance on breastfeeding positions and fit-and-hold techniques.
- Compression or support garments – Recommendations and provision of appropriate garments.
- Kinesiotaping – To help improve drainage and reduces swelling.
- Referrals – Referral to a lactation consultant or GP if necessary.
